Capstone Project (Undergraduate Thesis)
Below is the title and abstract of the thesis I researched in both English and Japanese. This is a project that many of us graduates started on a year before graduation. The hypothesis that led me to this project stemmed from hearing the many different types of onomatopoeia that the Japanese exchange students would say. There were so many words that did not have direct translations to English onomatopoeia. If you have forgotten what exactly an onomatopoeia is, well it's basically a word that describes an action, sound, feeling or certain abstract states of being. One of my best examples is, a cat says "meow." In Japanese, a cat says "nyan." My hypothesis states that American's usage, awareness and perceptions would be much less than that of the Japanese. There are some exceptions though especially when we talk to children. Overall, what I observed is that during everyday conversations in Japanese, onomatopoeia was used quite often. However, listening to English speakers it was very seldom. At the bottom of the page is two more links to the survey that I meticulously created, with the help of my advisors, in Japanese and English. The data recorded from those surveys helped me report a straight forward analysis of the usage, awareness and perceptions of onomatopoeia in comparison between American and Japanese university students. Check out the surveys!

Onomatopoeia: A Comparative Study of Usage, Awareness, and Perception Between Japanese and American University Students Advisor(s): Dr. Yoshiko Saito-Abbott, Dr. Shigeko Sekine Abstract: Onomatopoeia is used in any country, especially in Japan which is necessary for daily life and it used frequently. However the usage and perceptions of onomatopoeia are different between Japan and America. In this capstone I investigated how onomatopoeia usage, awareness and perceptions are different between Japanese and American university students using a survey. As a result I found that Japanese students have a stronger awareness of onomatopoeia than Americans. In terms of the daily usage of onomatopoeia, it is important to both Japanese and Americans for daily life, however, Japanese tend to use onomatopoeia with friends, children and family while Americans tend to use more with friends and children but not as much with family.
