Reflective Narrative
2.1 The courses taken for MLO 1 are also included in MLO 2 which revolves around culture. Part of the understanding, appreciation and knowledge was learned by relating many of the teachers experiences or ideas talked about to my own. If we were discussing Japanese history and their views on foreigners staying in there country, I would take a step back and put myself in their shoes and situations to get a better perspective (JAPN 302). Many of the philosophies, beliefs and values were greatly detailed in the art and literature discussed in the classes. I became more aware of the unique cultural attitudes concerning poetry, folk stories and novels written by Japanese throughout their history. This was learned by experimenting with the way Japanese incorporate nature and rules within their work. I was able to create haiku poems along with other poetic verses that followed the same requirements (JAPN 402). The most exciting learning process came in the form of writing journal reviews of Japanese movies. I was able to distinguish stereotypes and truths regarding Japanese culture portrayed in movies by discussion and research (JAPN 310).
2.2 In regards to critical thinking, I was challenged at every point of learning the Japanese language and culture. I constantly had to analyze reasons, attitudes and backgrounds to understand or compare the culture from an Americans perspective. This was done by taking in the information and the asking many questions to classmates, teachers and Japanese students (JAPN 300, 302, 402). From there i could discuss the differences and get a better understanding of unique Japanese culture. In addition, the discussions lead me to consciously think of the differences in a global perspective as well. One of the most influential elements was the comparison of social issues from Japan that I did not realize existed. I was able to critically think about how other counties problems can find solutions by opening up ideas from a global perspective. Also, a countries social issues can affect another countries policies as well. Having a better understanding of a cultures problems can help my own came up or prevent future problems of our own (JAPN 311).
