JAPN 311: Social Issues In Japan
Description
As the drive to rebuild modern Japan after WWII has slowed, latent and new social problems have become visible. This course offers interdisciplinary perspectives on issues such as care of the elderly and homeless, equal treatment of minorities, gender and labor issues, domestic and world ecological concerns, and relevant institutions that promote or attack prejudice towards heterogeneous social groups. Taught in English.
Narrative
Social issues in Japan was an eye opening for us students because we did not fully understand the issues or cultural perspectives that made the issues complicated. It wasn't just about politics, in fact the issues revolved many things we take for granted. For example, education, agriculture and food productivity, decreasing population and the most recent issue during my time at CSUMB which was the earthquake that ruined much of Japan's coastal areas. The Fukushima nuclear plant was a huge issue worldwide and we had the opportunity to understand the views of many Japanese citizens.
We were forced to look at our own country's issues as well with a much broader view and opened mind.
