JAPN 310: Japanese Cinema
Description
An introductory scrutiny of major Japanese directors and genres with attention to film composition, choices of subject and character, ideas of the cinematic, and the relationship of cinema to Japanese culture and society. Students will analyze and critique films. Discussion of films will deal with the production of their historical, social, and cultural context, as well as issues dealing with popular culture and equity. Taught in English.
Narrative
This was one of my favorite classes! Basically, we watched Japanese movies. But the class included discussions about stereotypes of Japanese culture along with many directing techniques from the creators of the films. The list of films spawned a large genre from comedy to action to drama and more. The movies were modern but also classic and a few from my heyday, the 80's and 90's. I was amazed to learn the specific meanings behind the film's true meaning along with social issues portrayed that are kind of a taboo from a Japanese perspective. I will not forget the movies I saw and I recommend anyone to invest some time into watching some foreign films just for a new experience if anything. Check out the movie called "Tampopo,", it's a 1985 warm-hearted classic comedy with great characters and acting.
