JAPN 401 Structure of Japanese Language
JAPN 402 Japanese Literature
Reflective Narrative
1.1 This MLO was like the heart and lungs of the Japanese Language program. It gave me the knowledge to improve my vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing of the language just for a starter. Many of the course work that facilitated this came in the form of quizzes, tests, presentations, and class participation. (JAPN 300). Consistently I would learn new Japanese words and writing daily with homework assignments. Many of the tools used to evaluate our progress was presentations where we put everything together to explain specific information. I learned to interpret culturally written documents about history and literature by answering questions about the Japanese documents I read (JAPN 302, 402). In addition, I communicated inter-personally with my classmates and teacher regularly to asses my progress in the Japanese language. These were the building blocks for the core structure of the language and they proved to be a large part of my success.
1.2 From spending so much time translating, figuring out grammar points to picking apart vocabulary, I gained an incredible amount of competency regarding MLO 1.2 above. The bulk of learning specific aspects of Japanese language like, syntax, morphology, semantics came from the linguistics of the language (JAPN 401). This was learned by examining the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as well as learning how to enunciate the right pitch within the Japanese language. Many of the lectures within the classes consisted of comparing and analyzing the differences between Japanese and English (JAPN 300, 302, 402). Much of how I learned these elements came from writing notes and creating presentational slides that incorporated many of the differences that were talked about. After absorbing the importance of this MLO, I now have a deeper appreciation to learning and continually advocate that importance to others around me.
