MLO's (Major Learning Outcomes)
There are five Major learning outcomes within the world languages department at CSUMB. The first deals with language and communication. The most basic of concepts but is core to learning how to actually speak in the target language. The second focuses strictly on culture which is one of my favorites because we get to learn many fascinating things that are very different from our own culture. The third is a secondary culture which focuses on making the student think more critically and globally through comparison between our own culture, Japanese culture and the new culture. My secondary culture was about the ancient Maya civilization which helped improve my thinking skills. The fourth MLO is research and technology. This is pretty straight forward, but to those who do not have much experience, this fourth MLO is designed to integrate the student in to a modernized world of information at our fingertips. The fifth and last MLO is Cultural Internalization and Language Immersion. This one is intended to put the student directly in the center of the the target language and culture. Ideally it would require the student to study abroad in Japan. However, in my case, I spent approximately 120 hours of community service teaching elementary students various bits of Japanese language and culture. This is just the basic information on the MLO's, so I have set up five buttons below to take you to an even more detailed explanation for each one with the respective classes that meet each MLO requirement.
